Newborn circumcision is a service offered in the state-of-the art Paediatric Surgical theatres at the Chelsea Children’s Hospital. Neonatal circumcisions are performed under a gentle local anaesthetic (known a “penile block”) in babies up to 6 weeks of age. The procedure, recovery and outcome are the same throughout this period. The baby may feed as usual before and after the procedure. The circumcision is completed surgically and no plastic or metal clamps are used or left behind – procedure takes 30-40 minutes. A water-proof skin glue is applied to the area so that the baby can bathe as usual from the first post-operative day. The “glue” flakes away on its own and doesn’t need to be removed. The recovery is usually quick but regular baby Calpol is advised for the first 24 hours. An antibiotic ointment is prescribed for the first five days.
